Email List or WhatsApp Broadcast? Keeping Repeat Customers in Lebanon
Most Lebanese shops keep customers on WhatsApp alone. What broadcasts can and cannot do, what an email list adds, how to build one before the holidays, and who to hire.
Ask a Lebanese shop owner where their customers are, and they will hold up their phone. Years of orders, voice notes and "is it back in stock?" live in WhatsApp. When there is a new collection or a holiday offer, the plan is simple: send it to everyone.
That instinct is right about one thing — WhatsApp is where Lebanese customers answer. But "everyone on WhatsApp" is not a customer list you own, and the tools that come with it have limits most owners only discover when they try to use them at scale, usually in the busiest week of the year.
This guide is about keeping in touch with the customers who already bought from you: what WhatsApp broadcasts can and cannot do, what an email list adds, why the answer for most businesses is both — with different jobs — and how to start building the list now, while there is still time before the holiday season.
What a WhatsApp broadcast actually is
In the WhatsApp Business app, a broadcast list sends the same message to many contacts at once, and each person receives it as a normal one-to-one chat from you. Replies come back to you individually. It feels personal, and it is free.
It also comes with conditions that matter:
- Only people who have saved your number receive it. WhatsApp's own help pages say so: a broadcast reaches only contacts who have added your number to their phone's address book. Many customers who have chatted with you never saved it, and they will simply not get the message.
- Lists are capped in size, so a large customer base means splitting it into several lists and sending several times.
- Blasting is against the rules. WhatsApp's terms prohibit bulk and automated messaging from the regular apps, and people who find messages unwanted can block or report you. An account that collects enough of those can be restricted — and for many Lebanese businesses, that number is the business.
For messaging at larger scale, Meta offers the WhatsApp Business Platform, used through Meta or an approved provider, with its own approval process for message templates and charges for marketing messages. It is powerful, but it is a project, not a setting.
What email does that WhatsApp can't
Email has a reputation in Lebanon as the channel nobody reads, and for some customers that is fair. But it does things WhatsApp cannot:
- You own the list. It lives in your email platform, exports to a spreadsheet, and survives a lost phone, a banned number or a change of staff.
- It reaches people who never saved your number, as long as they gave you their address and permission.
- It carries a catalogue. Photos, several products, prices and links in one message — closer to a shop window than a chat bubble.
- It automates well. A welcome message when someone joins, a reminder when an online basket is left behind, an order confirmation — all set up once and sent without anyone typing.
- It reaches the customers who live in their inbox: diaspora buyers ordering gifts for family in Lebanon, companies ordering corporate gifts, and anyone buying from an online store, who already gets their receipt by email.
Its weaknesses are real too. Many local customers rarely open personal email; messages sent from a free address or a badly configured domain land in spam; and it takes work to write something people want to open.
The honest answer: both, with different jobs
For most Lebanese businesses that sell to repeat customers, the sensible split is:
- WhatsApp for conversation. Answering questions, confirming orders, sorting out delivery, and — rarely — a short announcement to customers who have asked to hear from you.
- Email for the owned list. The holiday catalogue, the new collection, the monthly offer, the automated messages from your online store, and anything you want to reach people who have not saved your number.
What ties them together is permission. Whatever the channel, the people you message should have agreed to hear from you there. Ask clearly, record the answer, and make it easy to stop. That is what keeps your number unreported and your emails out of spam.
Build the list now, not in December
The list you can use in December is the one you build in October and November. Every order between now and then is a chance to collect an email address with permission:
- At checkout in your online store, with a clear tick box for offers.
- On the receipt or delivery slip, with a QR code to a short sign-up page.
- At the counter, with a card or sign that gives a reason to join.
- In your Instagram bio, pointing to the same sign-up page.
- In WhatsApp, by asking customers who have just ordered whether they want the holiday catalogue by email.
Give people a real reason. "Subscribe to our newsletter" persuades nobody. "Get the holiday catalogue a week before it goes public" or "first access to the limited boxes" does. A simple sign-up page is a small job for a landing page developer, and the same page can be reused every season.
A simple holiday plan
- October: set up the email platform on your own domain, put the sign-up points in place, and ask every new customer.
- November: send one genuinely useful email — the gift guide, the order deadlines for delivery before the holidays — so your name is familiar before the sales email arrives. Our Black Friday guide covers the order in which to prepare everything else.
- December: send the catalogue by email to the list, and one short WhatsApp message to customers who asked for it — not a blast to every contact on the phone.
If you are also running ads this season, our guide to whether ads should open WhatsApp or a landing page covers the other half: bringing in new customers.
What to hand a freelancer
An email marketing freelancer will work faster and cheaper if you give them:
- Access to your domain settings, or someone who has it, so emails can be sent from your own domain and set up so mailbox providers trust them.
- Your customer list, and how and when each person agreed to hear from you.
- Your product photos, prices and the dates that matter — last order date for delivery, holiday closures.
- One clear goal per email: a sale, a pre-order, a visit to the shop.
Our guide to hiring an email marketing specialist covers choosing a platform and what to look for in the person.
What it costs
On Furrsati, typical prices are:
- An email marketing campaign: typically $40 to $150 per campaign.
- A one-page landing website for sign-ups: typically $150 to $500.
- A Shopify store setup, if you want the checkout and receipt emails that come with an online store: typically $300 to $1,500.
- Customer support cover for WhatsApp: typically $5 to $15 an hour.
Email platforms charge their own subscription, usually rising with the size of your list; many have a free tier for small lists. Check current plans before you choose.
Hiring and paying safely
Ask any email freelancer: "How will you make sure our emails land in the inbox and not in spam?" A good answer mentions sending from your own domain, setting up its authentication records, and only emailing people who agreed to it. Ask to see a campaign they built and the results they tracked, in opens, clicks and sales.
This is where Furrsati removes the risk. You post your project, compare proposals from verified freelancers, fund a milestone, and release payment only once you've approved the work, with milestone funds held by Stripe until you release them. The service fee comes off the freelancer's side, so only standard card processing is added to your bill, and wallet-funded milestones carry none. Freelancers verify their identity before they can withdraw; as a client you need no verification. Payouts reach the freelancer inside Lebanon by OMT, Whish, bank transfer or USDT.
A sensible split is one milestone for setup — platform, domain, sign-up page and welcome email — and one per campaign after that.
Your next step
Count how many of your customers you could reach tomorrow if your WhatsApp number stopped working. If the answer is "none", start the list this week. Hire an email marketing freelancer to set up the platform and the holiday sequence, a landing page developer for the sign-up page, and, if you sell online, a Shopify developer to connect checkout to the list. If the chats are already more than you can answer, a customer support freelancer can take the WhatsApp side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is email marketing worth it for a small business in Lebanon?
For businesses with repeat customers, usually yes, alongside WhatsApp rather than instead of it. Email gives you a list you own, reaches people who never saved your number, carries a full catalogue and runs automated messages such as order confirmations. It works best for online stores, diaspora buyers and companies.
Why didn't all my customers receive my WhatsApp broadcast?
WhatsApp broadcasts reach only contacts who have saved your number in their phone's address book. Customers who chatted with you but never saved it do not receive the message. Broadcast lists also have a size cap, so large customer bases need several lists.
Can I send bulk WhatsApp messages to all my customers?
Not from the regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app: WhatsApp's terms prohibit bulk and automated messaging there, and accounts that are widely blocked or reported can be restricted. Messaging at scale is done through the WhatsApp Business Platform, with approved message templates and charges for marketing messages.
How do I build an email list for my shop in Lebanon?
Collect addresses with clear permission at every point of sale: online checkout, receipts with a QR code to a sign-up page, the counter, your Instagram bio and WhatsApp conversations after an order. Give a real reason to join, such as early access to a holiday catalogue.
How much does email marketing cost in Lebanon?
On Furrsati, an email marketing campaign typically costs $40 to $150, and a one-page sign-up site $150 to $500. The email platform charges its own subscription, usually based on list size, and many offer a free tier for small lists.
When should I start building an email list before the holidays?
Now, in October. The list you can email in December is the one you build in the months before it, and a helpful email in November makes your December campaign more likely to be opened.
