Who Answers Your DMs? Hiring Customer Support in Lebanon Before the Rush
Lebanese businesses sell in WhatsApp and Instagram DMs, and lose sales there too. What a freelance support person costs per hour, what to hand over, and how to set it up before Q4.
In Lebanon, the shop counter is a phone. Orders arrive as Instagram DMs, WhatsApp voice notes and Facebook comments; prices get quoted in messages, addresses get sent as pins, and payment gets arranged in the same thread. It works, and it is genuinely one of the better things about doing business here — no cart abandonment, no checkout friction, just a conversation.
It also has a failure mode, and every owner knows it. Messages arrive while you are serving someone, driving, sleeping, or dealing with the thing that broke this morning. By the time you reply four hours later, three of those people have bought elsewhere. You cannot see how many, which is exactly why the problem never gets fixed.
Autumn is when this stops being survivable. Business picks back up after the summer, and the run into November and December — gifting, end-of-year events, the holiday trade — is when message volume roughly doubles for anyone selling a product. The time to put someone on the messages is before that, not during it.
First, find out what it is costing you
Before hiring anyone, spend one week measuring three things. It takes a few minutes a day and it settles the argument.
Count how many first-time enquiry messages you receive. Count how many you replied to within one hour. Count how many turned into a sale. That third number, split by whether the reply was fast or slow, is your whole business case. Most owners who do this find their fast replies convert several times better than their slow ones — and that the slow ones cluster at exactly the hours they are busiest, which is to say the hours their business is going well.
Also note the questions. You will find that a large share of every message you receive is one of about eight questions: is this available, how much, do you deliver to X, how long does delivery take, how do I pay, what sizes or options are there, is there a discount, and where are you. That repetition is the reason this job can be handed over at all.
What you are actually hiring
Not a salesperson, and not a social media manager. You are hiring someone to be reliably present in your inbox during defined hours, answering the known questions accurately, capturing the orders, and escalating the rest to you.
A freelance support person handles the first reply within your promised time, answers from a script you approve, takes order details in a consistent format, confirms delivery areas and timing, follows up with people who asked and went quiet, logs what was sold and to whom, and flags anything unusual — a complaint, a bulk order, a special request — instead of improvising. Whether they work in Instagram, WhatsApp Business, Facebook or all three, the job is the same.
What stays with you: pricing decisions, discounts beyond an agreed limit, complaints that need an apology with authority behind it, and anything involving a refund. Write that boundary down. Almost every bad support-hiring story is a boundary that was never written.
What it costs
On Furrsati, chat and email customer support is priced hourly at $5 to $15. A general virtual assistant is also $5 to $15 an hour, which matters because for most small Lebanese businesses these are the same person: someone covering the inbox in the busy hours and doing order admin, listings or follow-ups around it.
Think in blocks rather than in full-time roles. Four hours a day, five days a week, covering your two busiest windows, is a modest monthly cost against the enquiries currently going unanswered at exactly those times. Start with the block that covers your peak, measure for a month, and extend it if the numbers hold.
What pushes an hourly rate towards the upper end is language range — genuinely fluent Arabic, English and French, which in Lebanon you can actually get — plus experience with your platform, comfort handling complaints, and reliability during evenings and weekends, which is when a consumer business gets most of its messages.
Be realistic about the hours you need rather than the hours you want. Evening and weekend coverage is worth more than weekday-morning coverage for almost every consumer business in Lebanon, and paying for the wrong window is the most common way this money gets wasted. Our guide to when to hire your first freelancer covers sizing that first commitment.
The handover pack that makes it work
The difference between a support hire that pays for itself in a fortnight and one that creates work is entirely in what you hand over on day one. Prepare these five things before the first shift.
An answer sheet. Your eight most common questions with the exact approved answer to each, including the ones you find tedious. Prices, delivery areas and fees, delivery times, payment methods, return policy, opening hours, location.
A price list with rules. Not just the prices — the rules around them. Who gets a discount, how much, and what to do when someone asks for more. If there is no rule, the answer is "let me check with the owner", and that is a fine answer as long as it is in writing.
An order format. The exact fields every order must capture: name, phone, item and variant, quantity, address with a pin, delivery date, payment method, total. One consistent format, in one place you both can see.
An escalation list. Which situations come straight to you, and how fast. Complaints, damaged goods, wholesale enquiries, anything about a refund, anything from a journalist or a large account.
A tone note. How you speak to customers. Do you use Lebanese Arabic, Modern Standard, English or French, and do you follow the customer's language? Do you use voice notes back, or only text? Are you formal or warm? Write two or three real examples of your own past replies — that teaches tone faster than any description.
Put all of it in one document and keep it current. It is also what makes the next hire easy, and what protects you when this person is unavailable.
Rules that prevent the usual problems
Set a response promise and publish it. "We reply within one hour, 9 to 9" on your Instagram profile is both a service standard and a filter. It tells the customer when to expect you and it tells your support person what the job is.
Own the accounts. Access is granted through your business account, with the support person added as a user with their own login, never through handing over your password. Removing access when the engagement ends should take thirty seconds. Instagram and WhatsApp Business both support this properly.
Decide what happens to the phone number. If your business WhatsApp number is your personal number, this hire is harder than it needs to be. Move to a separate number on WhatsApp Business before you bring someone in — it is the single most useful preparation step, and it cleanly separates your life from your inbox.
Agree on privacy. Your customer list is an asset. Say plainly, in writing, that customer contact details are not to be exported, reused or shared, and that screenshots of conversations do not go anywhere.
Review once a week, briefly. Fifteen minutes on what came up, what could not be answered, and what should be added to the answer sheet. This is how the eight questions become twelve and the escalations drop.
How to pick the person
Ignore the CV and test the actual work. Send three real messages from your own inbox — a normal enquiry, a delivery question you have not covered in the answer sheet, and an annoyed customer — and ask each candidate to reply as they would on the job. You will learn more from those three replies than from any interview.
Look for: a fast, clear, correctly spelled reply in the customer's own language; an answer that does not invent information; and, on the annoyed message, someone who acknowledges the problem and moves to a next step rather than arguing or over-apologising.
Ask directly about availability: which hours, which days, what happens on a public holiday, and what happens if their internet or electricity goes down — a real question in Lebanon, and a candidate with a clear answer has thought about it. Ask for a backup plan, not a promise that it will never happen.
Write the brief before you post, using our guide to writing a freelance job brief, compare candidates with how to evaluate freelancer proposals, and if the role is broader than the inbox, hiring a virtual assistant for a small business covers the wider version of the job.
Start with a paid trial of one or two weeks on a small block of hours, with a clear measure — reply time and orders captured — before you commit to a monthly arrangement.
This is where Furrsati removes the risk. You post your project, compare proposals from verified freelancers, fund a milestone, and release payment only once you've approved the work, with milestone funds held by Stripe until you release them. The service fee comes off the freelancer's side, so only standard card processing is added to your bill, and wallet-funded milestones carry none. Freelancers verify their identity before they can withdraw; as a client you need no verification. Payouts reach the freelancer inside Lebanon by OMT, Whish, bank transfer or USDT.
Your next step
Measure one week of enquiries and reply times, so you know what this is worth. Write the answer sheet for your eight most common questions. Move your business messages to a separate WhatsApp Business number. Then hire a customer support freelancer on Furrsati for the block of hours that covers your busiest window, or a virtual assistant if you want the order admin handled too, with your payment protected until the work checks out.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does customer support cost in Lebanon?
On Furrsati, chat and email support is priced hourly at $5 to $15, and a general virtual assistant is also $5 to $15 an hour. Most small businesses buy a block of hours covering their busiest window rather than a full-time role, which keeps the monthly cost modest and measurable.
Should I hire a customer support freelancer or a virtual assistant?
If the job is mostly answering enquiries and capturing orders during set hours, hire support. If it also includes order admin, listings, follow-ups and scheduling, hire a virtual assistant. They are priced the same hourly on Furrsati, so choose on the skills you actually need, not on the title.
How do I give someone access to my Instagram and WhatsApp safely?
Use your business account to add them as a user with their own login, rather than sharing a password, and move business messages onto a separate WhatsApp Business number before they start. Access can then be removed in seconds when the engagement ends.
What should I prepare before the first shift?
An answer sheet covering your most common questions, a price list with discount rules, one consistent order format, an escalation list of what comes straight to you, and a short note on tone with two or three examples of your own replies. Most support hires fail on missing preparation, not on the person.
When is the right time to hire for the inbox?
Before your busy season, not during it. Message volume rises through the autumn and into the November and December trade, so setting this up in September or October means the person is trained and confident before the pressure arrives.
How do I know it is working?
Track two numbers: the share of first enquiries answered within your promised time, and the share that become orders. Measure them for a week before you hire so you have a baseline, then review the same two numbers monthly.
